Hamline-Midway Real Estate - St. Paul MN
Living next to a major commercial thoroughfare such as the Midway section of University Avenue can be considered a plus or minus, depending on your point of view. While it's nice to be able to walk to a bakery or a perfonnance at Ginkgo Coffeehouse, the commercial character of the neighborhood may not be suitable for you, particularly if you have children.
Located just east of Saint Anthony Park and in the middle between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Hamline-Midway is a swath of ample to lowpriced houses adjacent to St. Paul's Midway, one of the Twin Cities' busiest corridors of discount grocery and department stores. University Avenue was an early route between the two Twin Cities, first by horse-drawn carriage, then electric streetcar, then by car. As the cities grew toward each other, the Hamline-Midway neighborhood emerged haphazardly as a checkerboard of mixed residential and commercial uses. Much of the housing stock went up before 1940, although pleasantly landscaped residences lining the narrow streets immediately surrounding the university were built as late as 1960.
Derelict housing to the east and south of the university is a concern, and in recent years, bank robberies, restaurant hold-ups, and murder have all taken place in this area. The western end of University Avenue is an industrial area containing warehouses, processing plants, some office buildings, and the Amtrak passenger train station. The other center of activity in the neighborhood is Hamline University, a private college on Snelling Avenue. Web Sites: www.ci.stpaul.mn.us, www. tcfreenetorg
