Sitting high on Dayton's Bluff, overlooking 1-94, are charming restored
houses and Metropolitan State University's main campus. This was St. Paul's first upscale neighborhood. From the bluff, there is a spectacular view of the cityscape below.
This terraced neighborhood was developed in the 1850s by land speculator Lyman Dayton who built a house on this land, hence the name, Dayton's Bluff. Today many "Victorian painted ladies" still stand here, some rehabilitated, some not Cupolas, dormers, gables, turrets, parapets and pediments are common architectural elements in this historic area. In addition, there are numerous smaller square wood frames built by workers who moved here In the 1880s.
Residents have worked hard to beautify this neighborhood. Gardens have been planted, billboards removed, and the work continues. Gauger Park is the setting for community socials, small outdoor theater and musical performances and neighborhood festivals. At the southern end of Dayton's Bluff is a steep hilltop with a breathtaking view of the Mississippi River Valley and both downtowns. As early as 1,000 B.C. the Hopewell Indians chose this area as a burial site, leaving behind a series of ovalshaped burial mounds along the edge of the bluff. The overlook, with the six gravesites that remain, is now Indian Mounds Park, complete with walking paths, picnic areas and playgrounds.
