Battle Creek-Highwood Real Estate - St. Paul MN

If you're looking for open space, the wide expanse of Sunray/Battle Creek/Highwood has it. Making up St. Paul's southeastern corner, much of this area consists of the wetlands of Pig's Eye Lake Park and Battle Creek Park, as well as a railroad and industrial zone that occupies a slice of land along State Highway 61. Two-thirds of the houses here have been built since the 1970s and run along grid streets and cul-de-sacs in the north and on large lots in the south. Large apartment and condominium complexes were built on the northern and central streets in the 1970s. As a result of the recent construction and low density, the neighborhood has the newer look of nearby Maplewood and Woodbury. The exception to this suburban appearance is the northwestern corner of Sunray, which is made up of simple, turn-of-the-century bungalows and Midwesternsquares, much like those in adjacent Dayton's Bluff. Many Sunray/Battlecreek/Highwood residents are professionals; others work in service and retail jobs. The neighborhood is youthful-you'll find youngsters galore-and mobile. Prices for the tidy houses, condos, and townhouses are above average for St Paul, comparable to house values in Como, but well below the most expensive Twin Cities neighborhoods. Houses also tend to be cheaper than in the nearby suburban communities of Maplewood and Woodbury.

Sunray/Battle Creek/Highwood is close to shopping centers along 1- 94, among them the Sun Ray Shopping Center and the Horizon Outlet Center, a mall containing more than fifty factory outlet stores. Ample hiking and biking areas can be found along the rocky ravines of Battle Creek Park and at other green spaces in the neighborhood. Across State Highway 61 from Battle Creek, Pig's Eye Lake Park Is home to nesting great blue herons, egrets, and connorants. Web Sites: www.ci.stpaul.mn.us, www.tdreenet.org
