"Nord'east" isn't all polka bars-it's also sturdy housing in relatively safe neighborhoods at affordable prices. Historically, the Northeast Community has been home to blue-collar workers of Polish, Ukrainian, Scandinavian, and German backgrounds, and the no-nonsense, roll-upyour-sleeves attitude of these early residents served to keep houses in this community in good repair.
Midwestern squares and small tum-of-the-century wood frame houses built before 1940 predominate in most of the neighborhoods. But the "Parks"-Waite, Audubon, Windom and Columbia-have newer houses and more white-collar workers, and are actually more like the suburbs they adjoin. The stretch of parkway nearby that runs from Hillside Cemetery through the community along St Anthony Boulevard to the Mississippi River to the west, has many parks in which to play, unwind, or walk the dog. And Heaven knows there are plenty of places to pray: one block of Northeast is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having four churches.
Windom Park is made up of a long strip of land running from Central Avenue, east to St. Anthony, between 18th Avenue and Lowry. Central Avenue is the main commercial corridor, and the new Quarry Shopping Center is on 18th Avenue. This end of Johnson Street has a mix of commercial and large residential rental units. The other major thoroughfare, Stinson, is a parkway that is included in the Grand Round. Craftsman and Tudor-style homes built in the 1920s and '30s are found along the parkway and to the east. Windom, the park, at the intersection of Johnson Street and Lowry Avenue, features a long, sloping hill that serves as a site for summer concerts and the annual Ice Cream Social, at the carnival that attracts families from throughout the area.
Adjacent to the park is the magnet Pillsbury School, specializing in math, science, and technology for early childhood through grade six. As one of its projects, it is collaborating with classrooms all along the Mississippi River to explore their communities' connections to the river. Students are studying the culture and history of their unique part of the river
