Heading north along Central Avenue, you'll see delis, polka lounges and supper clubs, as well as rows and rows of small, mid-western squares and bungalows. The Beltrami and Northeast Park neighborhoods, east of Central and south of Broadway, are picking up the pace. Some parents of university students are buying the tiny houses and duplexes for their children instead of paying room and board at school. Two-story plain frame houses built during the early 1900s make up the bulk of housing, but there are some more recently constructed (mid-1980s) houses to be found near the railroad tracks and along East Hennepin Avenue. Beltrami Park, off East Broadway, has a playground, pool, tennis and basketball courts and a baseball diamond. Now that the downtown warehouse area is in the midst of gentrification, some artists are choosing Beltrami for its less expensive studio space. This area is conveniently located to the university, Interstate 35W and to Northeast Park, where you'll find the Quarry shopping center with a Rainbow Foods, Target, Office Max, Petsmart, Home Depot, and Old Navy. The neighborhood of Northeast Park, just north of l-35W, is a small neighborhood, made up of quiet, dead-end streets. The Hillside Cemetery occupies a full third of this small neighborhood. Older homes in the area (1920s and '30s) are being bought by young families looking for starter homes with character, and some of its sturdy ramblers changed ownership for the first time in the 1990s.
