Ecco Neighborhood of Uptown & Minneapolis MN

As a general rule, the houses and apartments closest to the lakes are the most expensive. Sturdy Midwestern-squares, many of which have been divided into duplexes, predominate, and stately brick apartment buildings built as far back as the 1890s, still survive. The primary building period, however, occurred during the 1920s as part of a plan to convert East Calhoun into an "apartment district." Mediterranean-style structures from this period can be identified by their ornate decorations and clay tile roofs. Low-rise one- and two-bedroom apartment complexes built in the 1960s and '70th s can be found here too. With living quarters in abundance, the downside is traffic. The intersection at Hennepin and Lake is among the busiest in the Twin Cities.  To make commuting by bike more manageable, area residents have been among the most active promoters of the Midtown Greenway.  The below-grade bike path parallel to 29th Street runs from France Avenue across town to the Mississippi River.
