Across the river on the West Bank, Cedar-Riverside has gone through many incarnations from the "Snoose Boulevard" of Scandinavian immigrants at the turn of the century to the bohemian "New Town in Town" of the 1960s. Named for the crossing of the two streets, CedarRiverside has been a cultural center for over one hundred years, since the Danish immigrants built Dania Hall, a gathering place for Scandinavian singles, theatergoers and vaudeville entertainers. Sadly the hall burnt down during renovations in 2000. A creative element is still evident in the many music venues and small performance theaters which draw college students and music fans from all over the Twin Cities. The recently renovated Cedar Cultural Centre, 416 Cedar Avenue South, 612-338-2674, books culturally diverse acts from blues and folk to Celtic-rock. Cooperatively run vegetarian and ethnic restaurants thrive in this neighborhood filled with foreign accents. Most of the people who live here are college students or are connected with the University. Almost all the housing is rental, one-bedroom and built in the 1970s for a mobile population. The Riverside Plaza is a low-rent high-rise whose colored squares are visible from 1-94, looms above the neighborhood. A residential area which includes mid-western square-style duplexes and apartments lies to the east of Cedar Avenue. Next door neighbor University of Minnesota provides escorts to people who are out on campus at night. Take this as your cue that security is a definite concern here.
