The steam shovels are digging in Maple Grove even as you read this book. The city is going from open land and half a dozen residential centers along -494 to a real city with a new downtown and proposals for mixed-use development, new industrial zones, a private school, office buildings and retail shopping centers. Practically every big Twin Cities developer was in Maple Grove during the summer of 1999 with a proposal. Many of the projects slated for land north of 1-694 or west out 1-94 going toward St Cloud. Some redevelopment is also being suggested in the southern quarter of the city along 1-494. In 1950, Maple Grove's population was under 2,000. Twenty years later, the population was nearly 40,000 with most of the growth centered
on Fish Lake, Eagle Lake, Rice Lake, Mud Lake, and 1-494. By 1999 the population exceeded 50,000 and it isn't expected to quit until the population nearly doubles again by 2020, making Maple Grove one of, if not the fastest growing community in the metro area for the next 20 years. Additional fire stations, more schools, and other city services are being planned to keep pace with residential and commercial development. In fact, Maple Grove is building itself a whole new downtown, complete with a library, retail shops, rental townhomes, a city hall with a public safety wing, and a regional mall. The new downtown referred to as the Arbor Lakes Development, is located just north of interstates 94 and 694, in the Arbor Lakes gravel mining area.
In addition to Maple Grove's civic construction, parents will find that children of all ages have been worked into the expansion equation. To that end, there is a TnaeRlde Skate Park for skateboarders and in-line skaters at the Community Center. The police department runs a 30-hour Police Academy for residents and students over age 16, which teaches how the police department operates and the realities of law enforcement Volunteers who are at home during the day provide McGruff safe houses for children who find themselves in frightening situations. Maple Grove Community Center, 763-494-6200, offers child care, the Maple Maze indoor playground, meeting rooms, gymnasium, ice arena, indoor pool, senior center. The city operates a swimming beach at Weaver Lake, and there are two Hennepin County parks here that have trails, camping and swimming and picnic grounds. Call Elm Creek Park Reserve at 420- 5511 or Rush lake Regional Park at 420-3423 for information.
