February in The Twin Cities. Ways To Embrace, Ways To Avoid the Cold.
It’s February, the last complete, official month of winter. This first week of the month brought with it a foot of snow to the Twin Cities, and the first significant accumulation of the white stuff so far this winter. Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow even though we know here in Minnesota we have 6 more weeks of winter. Valentine's Day arrives on the 14th and on the 22nd we celebrate our great Presidents. February is also designated as Black History Month, American Heart Month, and Chocolate Lovers Month.
Let’s take a look at what is going on in our beautiful Twin Cities Metro this month as we decide how and where to celebrate.
Let’s Celebrate Black History Month
Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. improvised the most iconic part of his “I Have a Dream Speech”, or that Rosa Parks was not the first black woman to refuse to give up her seat on the bus?
In Honor of Black History Month, there are numerous events throughout the Twin Cities to celebrate. The Black Twin Cities website was the best source I found as to what, when, where and how to for these activities. Personally, I hope to catch Ruby! The Story of Ruby Bridges at the Steppingstone Theater in St. Paul. This play will run from Feb. 5 through the 28th. If your curiosity is peaked by the opening question check out this fascinating article on PBS on some little know black history facts.
Let’s Celebrate Heart Health
Did you know that heart disease is the number 1 killer or women and that all ethnicities share the same risk?
In honor of American Heart Month join the American Heart Association “Go Red for Women” initiative. The schedule of events supporting the Go Red campaign through March can be found The AHA website. I’m marking Sat. Feb. 13 on my calendar for the free health fair at the Mall of America!
Chocolate is a Celebration
Did you know that the average American eats about 11 pounds of chocolate a year? In honor of National Chocolate Month, why not enjoy some chocolate every day for the entire month of February. To get you started to check out these scrumptious recipes on Southern Living. Take a journey through historical and modern chocolates, Saturday, 13 at the GYST Fermentation Bar in Minneapolis. Need more suggestions? Check out Eventbrite. One last thought before we move on, you can always purchase a box of hand-dipped chocolates at your favorite confectionery. In my opinion, that is divine decadence!
Now, Believe it or not, Forbes Magazine cited Minneapolis as one the most unexpectedly romantic cities in the world! Now that you know this, just cancel those tickets to Paris and make a reservation at your favorite romantic area restaurant for you and your love. For the ultimate romantic Minneapolis experience, see the city as you ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Although all tours appear to be sold out for this year, put it on next year’s reminder list. Check out the Hitching Company website for complete information on dates, ticket prices, and availability. For more suggestions and ideas check out the Minneapolis visitor page on their website.
President’s Day February 22nd
Get ready for an upcoming long winter weekend! What to do with all that time? Here a couple of suggestions:Take the family skiing at the Highland Hills Ski Area in Bloomington. You'll love the beautiful new chalet, restaurant, ski rentals, and instruction. What an awesome way to enjoy winter! For complete information on schedules, services, hours of operation and rates see their website and be sure to check out their Facebook page.
Prefer not to be outside in the cold but want to participate in a physically active family activity an indoor water park might be just perfect. The Water Park of America located on American Blvd in Bloomington offers all day passes and evening passes. Try surfing the cascade falls, play water basketball, float down the “St. Croix”, enjoy the wave pool, rafting and slides. Sounds like a kid’s paradise to me. Lucky for us Twin City folk, there are several water park options available. For all the skinny check out the Family Fun Twin Cities Website.
If you are looking for more thrills and excitement indoors we suggest a day at Mall of America’s Nickelodeon Universe. Enjoy this unique themed amusement park on 7 acres right in the middle of the mall. You will find adrenalin pumping rides, unique retail shops, and entertainment. Meet the Nick characters too! Check out the website for complete details.
